The Holy Island Lindisfarne

Lindisfarne is one of the world’s most captivating places, and has been visited by religious pilgrims (where it gained its title of Holy Island)and mead connoiseurs. The mysterious and semi isolated tidal island is located around an hour outside of Edinburgh and a few minutes from charming Berwick Upon Tweed.

I initially visited Holy Island when I was a teen, and vowed to come back with my husband one day. My husband and I indeed did visit together, about a year after we were married. I had told him for years about how mesmerizing Lindisfarne was, and how I would love to live there one day.  We stayed at the Manor House hotel and had wonderful meals that included locally caught seafood. Our days were spent roaming with the sheep and wandering the fog covered streets. Lindisfarne Abbey is something everyone should see, as is the 16th century castle.

Saint Aiden’s winery is known for its stellar mead. As their website states,  the honey which is used in the production of Lindisfarne Mead is drawn from the four corners of the world and here, on the island, it is vatted with fermented grape juice, honey, herbs, and the pure natural water of an artesian well and fortified with fine spirits to produce this unique drink.’ It is to date the best mead we have ever had.

If you have plans to see Edinburgh, make sure to venture over to Lindisfarne, which is 65 minutes away from the airport. Make sure to check the tide times so that you don’t get stuck on the flooded causeway!
