See the Shroud of Turin

By Adrian Petersen , 3 May 2010

In Piazza San Giovanni sits the Duomo Di San Giovanni, Turin's only example of Renaissance architecture. Commissioned by Cardinal Domenico della Rovere, it was designed by a Tuscan architect, Meo del Caprina da Settignano and has a particularly fine façade. Adjacent, towers the 60 metre Campanile di San Giovanni, which built some 30 years before the cathedral itself.

Close to Piazza Castello in the centre of Turin, it was completed in 1498 and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The Chapel of the Holy Shroud was added between 1668 and 1694 and will be the resting place of the famous Shroud of Turin during the spring of 2010 following a long period of restoration to remove pieces of cloth that had been burned in the fire of Chambéry in 1532.

The Pope made a pastoral visit to Turin on Sunday 2nd May 2010.
