Always interested in new academic programs (especially those overseas), I recently sat down to talk with Dr. Janet Alperstein, Director, Office of Academic Affairs, Rothberg International School, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Located in Jerusalem, the Rothberg International School has a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, and has been providing global education to students from all over the world for over 50 years! We'll profile some of the Rothberg International School's academic programs over the next few days - they are extraordinary programs!
WE: Please tell us about your Community Leadership & Philanthropy Studies program.
JA: The CLPS program is designed to create a group of community leaders with theoretical and practical knowledge in the areas of leadership and philanthropy, who are acquainted with non-profit organizations. It offers a broad perspective in the management of non-profit and communal organizations and in the rapidly developing area of philanthropic studies.
WE: How long has this academic program been running?
JA: The Community Leadership and Philanthropy Studies program debuted in fall 2007 with nine students and has experienced growth even in its first year.
WE: What are your graduates from this program doing?
JA: The program will have its first graduates in the summer of 2009.
WE: How do your students get practical experience in this area, while learning?
JA: A primary component of the CLPS degree program involves gaining experience in the field. Students complete projects during both years of the program, and many chose to use this opportunity to volunteer or work at a non-profit organization. There is an abundance of non-profit organizations in Jerusalem, which provide an ideal opportunity for students to gain experience in a number of different areas.
WE: Who are your faculty?
JA: The faculty hails from the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
WE: Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?
JA: Students can specialize in Jewish Community Leadership by taking elective courses from the RIS program in Jewish Education.
