YOUNG TRAVELERS SELECTED TO BE TRAINED, PAID STORYTELLERS FOR GLIMPSE.ORG
Nearly 400 applicants vie for 10 positions
WASHINGTON (Sept. 2, 2009) -- After reviewing nearly 400 applications, Glimpse selected 10 exceptionally talented young Americans to serve as Glimpse Correspondents during the fall of 2009.
The fall 2009 class includes Rebecca Jacobson, a recent Brown University graduate, who is working with teenage girls in Malawi to create a dance-based gender advocacy campaign; Courtney Ng, a junior at Rice University, who has been clearing abandoned Inca ruins in Peru; and Jonathan Amerikaner, a UC Berkeley graduate, who is taking intensive Hebrew classes in preparation for becoming an Israeli citizen.
The Correspondents Program, supported in part by National Geographic Society, is a new opportunity for young Americans living abroad who are interested in writing and photography. Correspondents receive a $600 stipend, one-on-one editorial guidance, guaranteed publication on Glimpse.org, and potential publication in National Geographic platforms.
The program encourages participants to actively engage with locals abroad and to seek out thought-provoking cultural experiences.
Chantal Panozzo, a spring 2009 Correspondent in Switzerland, advises fall 2009 Correspondents, "Be serious about writing or photography, because the program will challenge you. It will ask you to go deeper not just to find the story, but to find the story within the story."
One-on-one editorial support and career training are other core benefits of the program. Says Emily Strasser, a spring 2009 Correspondent in India, "Working through the editorial process was harder than I expected. Yet I saw that the changes were mostly for the better. This was a very good lesson, as I hope to write more for publication in my future."
