There is more to Puerto Rico than sun-drenched beaches and rum based beverages with little umbrellas sticking out of top of the glass. There is golf, and world-class golf at that!

In this article I will highlight five great golf resorts that are wonderful destinations for your winter golf holiday.

The Hyatt Regency Dorado Beach along with the Hyatt Regency Cerromar have four courses to offer designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The signatures of Jones Sr. are seen through out the courses with ample bunkering and large greens.

The Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort features two courses, the Ocean Course which is a collaboration of George and Tom Fazio, built in 1975 and the River Course which was opened in 1996 as Greg Norman’s first design project in Puerto Rico.

Palmas Del Mar also offers two courses, in 1975 Gary Player designed The Palm Course and in 1999 Rees Jones debuted The Flamboyan Course. Like other courses on the island the architects, Player and Jones, took advantage of the natural beauty surrounding them to offer dramatic views and challenging play to golfers of all abilities.

The El Conquistador Resort offers some of the most breathtaking views on the island. The resort sits on a 300-foot bluff with dramatic views in all directions. Golf architect Arthur Hill took advantages of elevation changes as great as 200-feet, so blind shots are inevitable when designing a golf course in such an environment. The second time you play the course, you are more familiar and will undoubtedly score better, as you are familiar with the trouble spots.

As you can see there are many championship golf courses on Puerto Rico, and I have highlighted just five resort destinations. If you are so inclined the possibilities are endless by either renting a car or hiring taxi service you certainly can play numerous championship golf courses in the sun and breeze that always welcome you on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
