Frommer's NYC Free & Dirt Cheap - 382 Free Events, Attractions, Classes & More, 3rd Edition

When a book starts out with a diagram of free cultural events listings by DAY, you know you've hit the budget travel jackpot. Frommer's NYC Free & Dirt Cheap - 382 Free Events, Attractions, Classes & More, 3rd Edition, by Ethan Wolff, is a treasure trove of great information for having a spectacular time in a very expensive city.

Included in the book are:
Best Entertainment Bets
Best Cheat Eats
Best Living Bets
Best Shopping Bets
NY's top 5 Best Kept FREE Secrets
Best Exploring Bets

As well, there's an extensive entertainment section, including theater, music, film, dance, comedy, games, readings, and more.

The Eating and Drinking Section (always my personal favorite) is full of all sorts of advice for ethnic, healthy, BYOB, bagels, pizza, and more. OH YUM...

There's also a cheap living section, a dirt cheap shopping zones section, and a REALLY cool section on exploring New York. That one, along with the food, is my favorite section. There are also listings of free and dirt cheap days at specific places.

There are a plethora of maps for all of the aforementioned guidebook sections.

One of the best things about this book is the extremely friendly tone in which it was written. Each entry is so enticing, and you just WANT to go there, eat there, hang out there. Bravo, Mr. Wolff! You've made NYC extremely attractive to both visitors and locals alike.

Although there isn't a section for traveling with kids, if you know your child's interests well, you can sure find quite a bit to explore with them. Our daughter is extremely interested in Ancient Egypt, dance, and anything with water/marine life. In about half an hour, I could construct a whole week of free or dirt cheap activities for us to do...

If you peruse this book and don't immediately start planning a trip to NYC, I'd be surprised. I highly recommend this book to any traveler to  - or resident of - NYC. There are a lot of authentic, local, insider entries that we'd probably pay a lot of money for. Thankfully, we don't have to.
