By Jordan Milanese, 17 March, 2023

Dean Holbrough is a Canadian musician who took his studies abroad to the UK. Listening to Dean's story introduced me to a whole new perspective on what it is like to study in a different country. Studying abroad opens your eyes to a variety of new cultures and experiences, but also imposes many challenges as well. In the future, Dean plans on pursuing a career in the music industry.

What motivated your decision to study abroad? How/why did you choose the Solent’s Bachelor of Arts Popular Music Performance and Production program?
I have always wanted to travel! So I used studying abroad as a double experience. I chose based on Fanshawe’s Pathway program availability.

What has your experience been like? Can you share some favorite memories - and challenges?
It’s been very positive overall! Some favorite memories have been traveling to Budapest; some challenges have been adjusting to life in a new place, having to find new comforts to replace old ones.

What skills have you developed from your international education experience?
Adaptability! You learn to roll with the punches.

What has surprised you most about earning a degree abroad?
The lack of Canadians I have seen. I am the only Canadian in my entire program. However, the Canadian dollar is very weak so that is a contributing factor.

Any advice for students thinking about studying overseas? What are some highlights or things that you gained or changed your perspective?
Say yes to lots of things! Utilize travel as much as you can, take advantage of being in a new place and have fun.

How has international education impacted or influenced your cultural identity?
It has definitely given me perspective on how much is out there. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet people from places I have never been, so experiencing their culture alongside them is very special.
