Without a doubt, living in Thailand is an exciting and bold decision to make.
The longboat glided silently through the water, as the narrow channel opened up into the large expanse of Inle Lake. The shores seemed very far away, their green mountaintops disappearing into misty clouds. We passed other boats occasionally; mostly fishermen who swung their nets overhead and moved their wooden craft with a unique one-legged rowing method, their sinewy limb wrapped around the oar in a style not used anywhere else in the world.
In 1912, Matthew Henson published an account of his 23 years exploring with Commander Robert Peary and their 1909 journey to the North Pole in A Negro Explorer at the North Pole. In 2009 on the 100th anniversary of the journey, Matthew A. Henson’s Historic Arctic Journey was published. It includes Henson’s original story plus a forward by Commander Peary and an introduction by Booker T. Washington.

I watched a Secrets of the Dead show on public television last night (you can watch the whole thing "Sinking Atlantis" at: video dot pbs dot org slash video slash 1204753806) and although some interesting points were made I was disappointed in the generally irresponsible thesis that the eruption of the Thera volcano caused the destruction of Minoan civilization (with a not-so-friendly assist from the Achaean Greeks). For reasons which I'll go into in my next post this just isn't correct but my attention was caught by something else.
I have to give vent to an un-American thought.
