By Dr. Jessie Voigts, 14 February, 2009

Oh, I've had such fun with a new tool for creating playlists, from Playlist.com. I searched high and wide for a list of the top 10 travel songs, but I could not find exactly what I was looking for - most people had songs of PLACE, but not of TRAVEL. So I created my own playlist of my favorite (and new favorites) songs about traveling the world.

As one who has traveled around the world, the journey is so very important - much more so than the goal. Would you like some songs to accompany Your Journey? And, do you have any favorite travel songs you would like to share?

Here's my list of top 10 travel songs

1) Come Fly with Me - Frank Sinatra

Need I say more? He's the original!

2) Wonderful world -  Louis Armstrong

Not a travel song, per se, but more of an ode to the world. As any world traveler knows, the beauty that you find everywhere makes life and travel worth it!

3) 3 Little Birds - Bob Marley

Yes, the master of a song about smoothing the way through troubles. Travel without troubles is an oxymoron.  'nuff said...

4) Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

Who among us hasn't longed (or done) a fast roadtrip, in a fast car? Yep.

5) To Be Gone - Anna Ternheim

A poignant look at the wish to just BE GONE.

6) Alex on the Spot - Hans Zimmer and will.i.am

Our daughter's favorite song on this playlist - upbeat, and exciting!

7) Long and Winding Road - the Beatles

Any playlist about travel without this song in it isn't really a playlist about travel, is it?

8) See the World -  Gomez

A sweet paeon to thinking about where you would like to go.

9) Chandni Chowk to China -  Shankar

A fun, international song about heading to China from Old Delhi, India - from the movie, Chandni Chowk to China

10) Home -  Michael Buble

My very favorite. Because one of the best parts of travel is coming home.

No Arguments From Me

Putting Ol Blue Eyes and Satchmo at the top of the list (on purpose or by accident) gets my vote.

Hi traveler

I do hope that this time, the computer will accept my efforts. I do believe that 2+0= 2 but the computer must have had something else in mind. I have almost given up trying to post comments because of this. Each time I've tried, the second math question does not accept my answer.

Now, about your travel songs...a great idea. I'll be on the lookout for more.

The lead-off song in my travel mix is "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane...closely followed by "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz. I keep meaning to post my own list one of these days :)

Classic Beatles

The Long & Winding Road is one of my all time favorite Beatles songs.  Looking forward to seeing more travel songs on the site.  Thanks!

songs for the journey

Jessie,

thanks for the recommendations. I especially like the idea of What a Wonderful World as a travel song -- have you heard Adie Grey's version of it? different than the original but really good as well.

as for songs to add, Tish Hinojosa's God's Own Open Road is a great one, and so is Somewhere Along the Road, from Cathie Ryan. Chris Smither's Up On the Lowdown could make an interesting travel companion too, especially when, for instance, finding one's way along a crowded street. maybe I should do a post on this subject too...
