By Dr. Jessie Voigts, 27 October, 2010

We had the worst colds during our first week in Scotland, and there was constant rain. We consoled ourselves with fantastic views of Loch Ness, unexplained wave patterns, clouds, and rainbows. Eventually, we ventured forth to Inverness. Once there, we decided to follow a recommendation to visit an incredible artist and her husband, who have a B&B in Upper Glassburn. I phoned Ishbel Strachan and asked if we could look at her art – generously, she invited us to visit.

Winding roads, beautiful scenery – it was all just a prelude to one of the most enjoyable afternoons that we’ve ever experienced. Ishbel and George jokingly claim to live in the “center of the universe,” as they are located in the mountains, on a river, with a gorgeous art studio (with room for friends), family right next door, a world-renowned music studio that George and his son John (together known as the Ferrymen - I am even now listening to their extraordinary cd, A Long Night at the Ferry) built, and a peaceful, serene bed & breakfast.

Art Studio, Ishbel Strachan

Ishbel and George welcomed us, served tea, showed us their world. Their granddaughter befriended our daughter and they disappeared for hours. We were regaled with stories of art, interesting global visitors, George’s weekend route as the Postie (postman) to (it seems) half of Glen Affric.

To us, Scotland is Ishbel and George’s hospitality: pure gladness to be with us, real warmth, conversation, art, culture, gorgeous location, kindness, and genuine friendship – a welcome home.

Loch Ness!

Isn't it the unplanned chance encounters with people while traveling that make the best memories?! Beautiful painting, their "center of the universe" sounds enchanting.
