Music can be a way of connecting community, in hard times, in times of celebration, and in day to day life. Music is helpful for reflecting on one's own, also. Music offers ways of marking things, too, and of considering questions and challenges which may arise.

Whatever season you may be in, consider the work of these musicians as you move through the time.

Music for Connecting Community

One of the biggest issues in the history of mankind is climate change; there are appalling effects of climate change to our planet, society, and the communities it impacts. The amount of pollution contributed to global climate change is partially due to heavy consumerism. The rise in global temperatures will inevitably lead to lack of quality crops such as cotton, reducing the ability to make quality clothing.

I drove down to Myrtle Beach last spring break. Upon arriving, I couldn’t help but notice the mounds of litter huddling around the stop sign at an intersection. While walking around, I was able to observe the murky waters of this popular spring break spot. I wondered how the ecosystem in the local ocean was able to survive the hazards caused by beachgoers, and how it affected the local water quality.

Ellie Calvert is working towards her Associate of Science at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) in the hopes to become a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA). She notes, “I have been doing ballet my whole life, and I am a retired professional ballet dancer! I am currently a Pilates and Ballet Instructor at various ballet schools around the city.”

Ellie Calvert: #CommunityCollegeBecause ... It’s A Great Education For Everyone

With pandemic restrictions slowly lifting, now it’s a great time to move around and travel. Due to work, domestic obligations, and overall life stress, it's always a good idea to take a break and move around as much as you comfortably and safely can. With that said, it's easier said than done to book a place and go through with your travel plans. The hardest part of the experience is picking a place to visit (So. Many. Choices.), and that's where most people scrap the idea entirely.

One of our favorite places within Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is the art exhibition space. In an enormous complex completely devoted to art and nature, there’s so much to see here. But as you excitedly venture through the front doors and traverse the gorgeous new entryway, plan time to peruse a landmark art exhibition before heading to the Butterflies are Blooming exhibit in the conservatory (running now) or exploring the vast sculpture gardens (perhaps once we stay above freezing temps here in Michigan).

In 2012, when Hurricane Sandy struck, I lived in Long Beach, NY. Living right on the ocean meant the threat of a hurricane could necessitate a water rescue. We were able to safely evacuate and had a safe place to stay. We left for our own safety—and so that no rescuers would need to risk their own life to save us. In the hurricane’s aftermath, we volunteered at the Long Beach Ice Arena, which quickly became the donation/distribution hub for the entire barrier island. Help came from everywhere.

Michigan is a beautiful state with plenty to offer tourists and residents alike. Whatever you love, you're sure to find it here. Visitors come from all around the United States and the world to play, learn, eat well, and enjoy Michigan's four distinct seasons.
