What do you do when you’re bored? Do you play with your dog? Watch TV? Or do you do what most people do, go on YouTube? No need to lie. I do the same.

All too often unrealistic expectations and personal prejudices prevent us from fully understanding and experiencing the unique places around the world (Bulgaria included) that we so eagerly set out to see. Getting there, although it could be quite difficult at times, is just half the battle.

Have you heard of Demre, Turkey? It’s on the southwest Mediterranean coast, in the Antalya Province. And, it’s the town of three names – currently named Kale, although no one calls it that. Most people head to Demre to visit the church of St.

Even in winter, national wildlife refuges hold pleasures for nature lovers. Look for surprises, too: ducks and geese in profusion, a furtive red fox darting past, animal prints stamped clearly in the ground, the creaking of trees in the cold. Try exploring some trails by snowshoe. Or take a wildlife tour … on a horse-drawn sleigh.

Are there families that get along during the holidays? Possibly, but in my case, no. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family. They love me and are funny, and are always there for me, but they drive me absolutely nuts! Up until now, I never noticed how crazy and dysfunctional the Siegel family is.

My family and I boarded the Circumvesuviana train to head back to Sorrento, Italy, where we were staying for the night. We had just finished a tour of the ancient city of Pompeii, buried in ash by the volcano Vesuvius, which erupted in 79AD.
